Ash and I decided to take a road trip this weekend, and ended up heading to Newport, RI to go n some mansion tours. We left Boston around 9am and arrived at The Breakers a bit after 10am. The Breakers was built in 1895 and was home to the Vanderbilt family. It’s quite a large palace, and at the time it was built had electricity and central heating – remarkable for the time. The view is breathtaking, with incredible sea views of Easton Bay. We then walked to another mansion, Rosecliff, which has been used in many movies, including the Great Gatsby with Robert Redford. This home, while much smaller, was lovely, and inviting. We had lunch at Flo’s Clam Shack, a very crowded beachside seafood bar and restaurant. I enjoyed the fried whole belly clams and it was a good atmosphere. We drove back and spent the day at home, although I did take run – with a clam and beer full belly.
