Horses

This morning my father and I took a ride out to the horse farm where they get horses ready for the race track. We saw two of his horses get a little gallop around the short 1/4 track. They were very green, moving around all over the track. Hopefully, they will be fast once they get to California. We grabbed some burritos for lunch at Los Vaqueros, which is right around the corner from my parents house. I was pretty satisfied with the California burrito. There just isn’t anything in Boston that resembles the Mexican food in Arizona.

In the evening we went to Durant’s for dinner. It was a really nice dinner. we sat next to the bar. My father and I shared a 16 oz Prime Rib, while my mother had the Salmon. We also had some oysters. It was all delicious, and its always special to be at Durants.

Hall of Fame

Today I spent the morning with my mother driving to some of my favorite vintage stores in Phoenix. We were a little pressed for time, but were able to hit Retro Ranch and Antique Sugar. We also stopped at Frances, but that store is not as good anymore since changing hands. After vintage shopping we stopped at El Napolito for some tortas. I had the Cubana, very good!

Later in the evening was the Hall of Fame event. It was nice to be back on BCP campus and to see the large support for the event. I’d estimate 200-300 people were there. I gave a short speech about my friend Evan Whitfield who was being inducted into the hall of fame. I think my speech went well, although I did confess to being nervous during my speech. Afterwards many soccer alumni hung out and had a few beers while reminiscing about the evening. It was great to see everybody.

Got to hang out with this guy while getting ready to go to the event this evening.

LED Boxes

Our sophomore students are working towards creating their LED light boxes. I’ve been impressed with creativity in which the students are going about designing their boxes. These boxes are actually more complex than just 6 sides that fit together. It requires interior structure to hold circuitry, panel mount openings for sensors and controls, and means to open and fix in case it breaks. Here are a few pics I snapped today of their work.

Additionally, after school today I took a taxi to the airport for a flight to Phoenix. I’m speaking at an event tomorrow. Will write about that in a later post.

New Frosh

Today was the first day of new freshmen for our shop. The way vocational schools work is to have freshmen do ‘rotations’ for the first part of the school year. Each school handles this differently, but our school has students interested in the vocational school do a rotation (a 4 day introduction to a shop) for each of the 15 shops we have at our school. After that students then choose which shop they would like to join for the rest of the year and hopefully for the rest of their time in high school.

Last year the Robotics & Engineering shop had a huge freshmen class, about 19 students, although that has dwindled to 16 currently. Our new group of freshmen is another group of 19. It’s great news, but a lot of students for us and will mean we are going to be bursting at the seams next year. We only have 20 works stations in the shop, so we will need to be creative as to how we enable all students to work on projects each day. Still, this is great news for the shop, and show how popular the new space we built is for the program. I will post some images of our new baby engineers over the next few weeks.
